Stitches Anyone?

Okay...I am so SORRY if the above pic grosses any one out. It actually grosses me out & it is my forehead!! Layne didn't think I should post a pic of my stitches, but Andy said I should so.....here goes....maybe it will influence some one for good.

My dermatologist's office called me back a couple days ago. They biopsied the bump on my forehead and it was a basal cell carcinoma. They wanted me to come back in so the Dr. could make sure he got all of the cancer out. I thought okay no big deal...and I scheduled another appointment.

Luckily, my mom insisted that she come with me to the appointment. I think I am still in shock with what he had to do, I had no IDEA it was going to be like a major surgery. The Dr. explained everything to us, and it all made perfect sense. He had to make sure and cut all the cancer out. He could only stitch it a certain way because if he pulled the skin together the wrong way one of my eyebrows would be higher than the other. He was also very careful and made the incisions in the folds of my forehead wrinkles. I even asked him if I should be seeing a plastic surgeon and he assured me no. But, I still have my doubts...I guess we will see how it heals.

I got like 30 STITCHES, but that wasn't the worst part, BOY did the anesthesia shots HURT!! Just picture a HUGE pregnant girl, leaned back in a chair, feeling like I can't breath because the baby is up in my lungs, trying to keep from going in to labor because I am so tense, all while I am sweating like a HOG!

The thing I have learned from ALL this is to 1. GET CHECKED BY A DERMATOLOGIST EVERY YEAR & 2. WEAR SUNSCREEN!! I remember my SIL was telling me her & her kids get checked by the Dr because they have a lot of moles. I remembering thinking I am not very moley so I thought I was in the clear, boy was I WRONG...if you have any red looking bump, that doesn't go away, GO TO THE DR! Also, lather on that sunscreen. My Dr. said if you wear sunscreen from 2-18 yrs of age your risk of developing skin cancer goes down 80%!

I go back in 10 days to get the stitches removed...I can't wait...every time I raise my eyebrows or brush my hair it HURTS. Although I must say I am grateful it was not a melanoma, it could have been ALOT worse. I will take a scar on my face any day over full blown cancer!!

Hi KAtie,
I am so sorry. I am so glad that you went though and had it removed. Skin cancer is so SUPER scary because it is so fast. I am not sure what your doc told you, but after Grant's carcinoma and Lance;s melanoma - my kids have earned a derm checkup every year.Conner already has 2 "watchers" that I think have changed and goign to get removed. He is going to love that. Good luck with the healing!! It doesn't matter what you have on your forehead, you will always be one hot mama!!! xoxo-Amy (glad you are ok)

Yes, I am so glad you posted pictures!! I don't think it looks to gross...it looks painful!! Everyone is right you look fabulous no matter what. I am sure it will heal just fine. Just make sure to get some Merderma to help lessen the scar. I'm so glad Mom went with you. Can you even imagine if you went by yourself? You probably would have passed out! Thanks again for giving me coupons today to get the PowerAides and for the Bagel things. I am so excited about finally having something I can eat for breakfast. Love you!

You poor thing! I am so glad that it's not cancer. We need to get together. I can't wait to see your cute little girl(and I am sure you are even more excited to have her keep us posted and make sure layne lets Brad know when you have her) and I am glad that you are healthy.

Jeff went through the same thing, but it was on his chest. The scar was huge and luckily his wasn't cancer, but they dug deep to make sure they got all of it. It killed him for months after. And he's white as can be. If you're worried about the scar you can call my dad. He's good with scars and stitches. I'm sorry they made you go through this while you were pregnant.

SCARY!! I didn't know you had that many stitches.. I am sorry girl. It will heal and if it leaves a little scar oh well.. your bangs will cover it. So I have been getting this spot right above my lip.. and I only noticed it after I was tanning..makes me look like I am getting a mustache..LOL! Scary!

Wow Katie! I'm so sorry to hear about your ordeal, but I'm soooo glad that it's not a melanoma. Cancer scares the poo out of me! It's so worth it to just take precautions and get yourself checked regularly eh? Good luck with your recovery! I would say don't worry about your scar healing ok. A few years ago when a dog bit my face and took out a chunk of my lip, they thought for sure I would need plastic surgery, but since I live a healthy life style (ie word of wisdom)they were SHOCKED at how well and how fast my body healed and the scar disappeared! Glad you're ok.

Ouch! You poor thing, that does not sound fun to have to go through that while being pregnant. Tyler's been bugging me forever to go to a dermatologist to get my moles checked. Do you recommend yours?

chris+amber said...

SCARY! I can't believe a little spot like that would leave you with THIRTY stitches! And, yuck...you had to go through this being 8 mos. pregnant. I hope you're feeling better! I, too, will be going through bottles of sunscreen like nobody's business from now on!

Shelly said...

Oh my gosh! That is crazy. It is a good thing that they caught it early though just in case.

I hope you are healing okay. Hopefully a plastic surgeon will not be needed, like the dr. said.

Holy cow Katie! How scary. It's a good thing I made sure I wore sun screen the entire time we were in the Bahamas. I am so glad it was nothing more.

Oh Katie, that looks painful! that is really scary! You need to look into Fake Bake air brush. It's a spray that you apply to yourself. I love it, it looks like I have been in Mexico. I am glad you caught it when you did.

Oh my gosh! I can't believe you had to go back and do that but what a relief that it wasn't worse. I'm sorry girl. I can't believe we never wore sunscreen in highschool because we wanted to get tan, what were we thinking? I definately need to see a dermatologist, I'm a moley girl. I hope you are feeling good, only 3 weeks or so to go!

WOW! That's a little shocking... I think I will be using a little more sunscreen from now on!
